Two lasers. No blade.
A femtosecond laser separates a thin protective layer at the front of your cornea and leaves it hinged on one side. This is the flap. No blade is involved at any point.
An excimer laser, the ZEISS MEL 90, then reshapes the tissue underneath to the plan built from a scan of your own cornea. The flap is laid back where it came from and heals without stitches.
The flap is what makes it fast, and the flap is what it asks of you in return.

The cornea is reshaped
The flap is folded back and an excimer laser reshapes the tissue underneath, following the plan built from your own scan.

It is laid into place and holds on its own. No stitches, and nothing for you to do but rest your eyes.

What it is good at

What it asks of you
- The flap is a cut of about 20 mm, and it wants more care in the early weeks than a 2 mm opening does.
- Drier eyes in the first weeks than after SMILE Pro. It settles, but it is real while it lasts.
- Sport waits a week, and swimming and sauna wait two.
The ones people actually ask.
No. Drops numb the eye before anything starts. You feel pressure, not pain.
The flap. Femto-LASIK makes it with a femtosecond laser, LASIK makes it with a precision instrument. What happens underneath is the same reshaping either way. We offer both, and the surgeon chooses between them from your scans.
SMILE Pro makes no flap and works through an opening of about 2 mm. Femto-LASIK makes a flap about 20 mm across and is the more versatile of the two. Which one suits your eyes is exactly what the free check answers.
Dryness in the first weeks is the common one, and it is more noticeable after a flap method than after SMILE Pro. We prescribe drops for it and check how your eyes are doing at every follow-up.
Leave them out for at least 24 hours before, ideally 2 to 3 days. If that was not possible, come anyway and tell us what you wear.
For distance, that is the goal. But from around forty-five the lens inside every eye stiffens, and most people eventually use reading glasses. That happens with or without treatment, and we will tell you honestly what to expect for your eyes.
